Electronic packaging is the design and production of enclosures for electronic devices ranging from individual semiconductor devices up to complete systems such as a mainframe computer. Packaging of an electronic system must consider protection from mechanical damage, cooling, radio frequency noise emission and electrostatic discharge. Product safety standards may dictate particular features of a consumer product, for example, external case temperature or grounding of exposed metal parts. Prototypes and industrial equipment made in small quantities may use standardized commercially available enclosures such as card cages or prefabricated boxes. Electronic packaging is the design and production of enclosures for electronic devices ranging from individual semiconductor devices up to complete systems such as a mainframe computer. Packaging of an electronic system must consider protection from mechanical damage, cooling, radio frequency noise emission and electrostatic discharge. Electronic packaging is a major discipline within the field of mechanical engineering.

Design: Electronic packaging design is the skilful balancing and engineering of design trade-offs at all levels of packaging while working to produce an optimal overall system design. The different design options available have the potential of producing conflicts between some of the packaging functions if they are not carefully chosen. Design choices must be weighed and made for every level of interconnection. These choices must be consistent with existing design practices and available manufacturing technology. These trade-offs need to be carefully formulated at the initial system conceptual design stage. As the hardware is built and tested, some of the initial trade-off decisions are generally revisited and rethought. Decisions made at this initial stage need to be sound and well thought out. The broad directions must be correct for the design effort to succeed. The system’s success or failure can be sealed at this stage.

Electronic Circuit Design: To design any electrical circuit, either analog or digital, electrical engineers need to be able to predict the voltages and currents at all places within the circuit. Linear circuits, that is, circuits wherein the outputs are linearly dependent on the inputs, can be analyzed by skilled technician using complex analysis. Complex digital circuits are typically designed with the aid of computer software and specialized software such as SPICE and EMTP had been created to analyze complicated or too nonlinear circuits. Simple circuits may be designed by connecting a number of elements or functional blocks such as integrated circuits.
