PHOTOGRAPHY AS SELF-EXPRESSION.The role of the artist has always been firstly that of the observer and secondly that of the reporter of those observations through the lens of the artist's own mind. Seeing is not a task that can be delegated. We each have a highly individualized perception of the world around us, seeing it through experiences, present beliefs, and learning responses. We are more likely to see something we are already fascinated by or attracted to.

We don't just use our cameras to make an image; we use every part of ourselves to envision and create it. Our vision is both literal and metaphorical, encompassing not only our eyes but also our intellect, our emotions, and our other senses as well as our passions, our likes and dislikes, from our favorite songs and colors to the book we read. We put all these things into each moment of observation.

EVERY DAY, THE LIGHT IS DIFFERENT. It will never look just like this again. You will never have this day again, and no two photographs you take will be the same. Ask yourself, "Why do I photograph?" Once you know where your interest lies, you will be in a better position to hone the way you observe and see more of what speaks to you. I photograph because I want to share the exquisite beauty of the world with others. This can take the shape of the way light falls on water, the intense green of the morning grass covered in dew, or the steam rising from my cup of coffee.

WE'RE SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL NATURE. So, I am always looking for things that speak to me of the beauty that surrounds me daily, and so it seems that I am constantly surrounded by moments of beauty. We are drawn to photograph things that resonate with our innermost selves, and once we start looking for something, we seem to see it everywhere. You can prove this by giving yourself an assignment to photograph a certain subject. Notice whether you see more of that subject than you ever did before you focused your awareness on it. We miss so much in our rush to live life.
