The pads were originally built for the huge Apollo and Saturn V rockets that launched American Astronauts on their historic journeys to the moon and back. It has served as backdrops for America's manned space flight endeavors Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and the space shuttle.
‹•› Most of the installation area is restricted and only 9% of the land is developed, the site also serves as an important wildlife sanctuary. Mosquito Lagoon Indian River, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Canaveral National Seashore are other features of the area.
