MUIR WOODS NATIONAL PARK
A GREAT DAY TRIP. Muir Woods National Monument is part of California’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area, about 12 miles north of San Francisco. Muir Woods is the first National Monument that was created solely because of a land donation from a citizen. Congressman William Kent donated the land to protect redwoods, 
some of which are over 150 years old, from the logging industry boom. 
Muir Woods is known for its towering old-growth redwood trees, California big leaf maples, tanoaks, and Douglas fir. The forest floor is covered in redwood sorrel, ferns, fungi, duff, and debris. The trees' ages range from 400 to 800 years, their height up to 250 feet. Wildlife inhabitants include the endangered coho salmon fingerlings, Pacific wren, woodpeckers, owls, deer, chipmunks, skunks, river otters, and squirrels. Muir Woods National Monument was established on January 9, 1908 when President Roosevelt signed legislation to protect an old-growth coast redwood forest from destruction. Though much of California's 2 million acres of redwood forest were lost to the logging industry, this stand was saved from destruction by William and Elizabeth Kent, who purchased the land in 1905, and later gifted it to the federal government.
HIKING TRAILS. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Woods is a pedestrian's park. Muir Woods National Monument contains 6 miles of trails. There is a 1/2 hour loop, a 1 hour loop, and a 1 1/2 hour loop hikes on trails that extend into surrounding Mount Tamalpais State Park. The popular 2-mile main trail, which begins at the park headquarters, has been covered by a wooden boardwalk, and provides easy access to streams, ferns, azaleas, and redwood groves. There are flat easy trails loop through the groves. The trails in Muir Woods are asphalted or boadwalked. Trails on the canyon walls are dirt, narrow, steep, and rutted with tree roots. Stroller and wheelchairs are not advised on most of the upper trails. Pets, bicycles, smoking, horseback riding and camping are not permitted within the park. Food is not permitted in the forest. To ensure safety, let friend know where you are going and when you are coming back.

WHAT TO BRING. Light snacks and water, a field guide, a camera, and a binocular. In the Fall, layers of clothing, raincoats, warm hats, scarves, mittens, and extra pair of socks.
GETTING THERE. Getting to Muir Woods can take a long time. You may have to take a shuttle from Sausalito and traffic on the road to get there can be maddeningly slow. To ease crowding at Muir Woods, all visitors arriving in a vehicle are required to have a reservation. This requirement went into effect in January 2018. There is NO cell phone service or WiFi at or around Muir Woods, which makes it essential to download or print your parking reservation or shuttle ticket before you go.
TAKE A SHUTTLE. On weekends and holidays, and on weekdays from June 18 to August 10, you can take a shuttle to Muir Woods from any of three locations in Sausalito. You can get maps and public transit directions to the shuttle locations at the Muir Woods Reservations website GoMuirWoods.com. Riders under the age of 16 can go for free, but they must have a reserved seat. The shuttle can accommodate wheelchairs, and service dogs are allowed. Shuttles return to Sausalito at frequent intervals throughout the day.
DRIVE YOURSELF. You can reserve a vehicle parking space and driving there yourself. Drive-in reservations are valid only for the 30-minute time window you select when you make them. Search for "1 Muir Woods Rd., Mill Valley CA" instead of just Muir Woods to get accurate directions and travel time. A reservation ensures entry within a specific time window, but once you arrive, you can stay as long as you want, until the park closes.
